Commemorating 50 years since Apollo 11 with the Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch

20thJuly, 2019 marked the 50thanniversary since Neil Armstrong made history by becoming the first person to step foot on the Moon.

One brand which bares special ties with this monumental moment in history is Omega, and the brand continues to be influenced by the legacy of the moonwalk and the role they had to play aboard Apollo 11.

The Speedmaster Professional

The Speedmaster Professional is famously the first watch to be worn on the moon, and thanks to Buzz Aldrin baring the watch on his wrist as he made those first iconic steps onto the Moon’s surface, it is now more commonly known as ‘The Moonwatch’. Fifty years on, the watch continues to hold its status as one of the world’s most iconic timepieces. This iconic status is not only thanks to its unique place in space exploration history, but also down to its legendary design. Omega’s Speedmaster Professional Chronograph is the only piece of equipment used in all of NASA’s piloted space missions. From Apollo 11 to current international Space Station programmes, the Speedmaster Professional Chronograph remains the only watch certified by NASA for use on an Extra Vehicular Activity- a true testament to Omega’s watch making engineering on the model.

The Speedmaster Moonwatch 321 Platinum

Announced on 20th July, 2019, Omega are set to expand the Speedmaster Moonwatch family with the 321 Platinum edition to comenmorate the 50th milestone of the historic moment in the watch model’s life. Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch

We love the Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch with its iconic black dial complete with hesalite crystal. The black bezel with its tachymetric scale is mounted on a 42mm stainless steel case presented on a matching steel bracelet. Its iconic design is complemented with equally iconic technical spec. At the heart of this chronograph is Omega’s mechanical calibre 1861, the same winding movement worn on the moon.
