The Rolex Datejust 41 is the quintessential all-round luxury watch, combining the perfect selection of materials with just the right proportions. Recently made available in a modern white Rolesor version, which sees a stainless steel Oyster case paired with an 18ct white gold fluted bezel, this instantly recognisable timepiece has become an even more attractive option for daily wear.
These days we take the understated good looks and effortless functionality of the Rolex Datejust for granted. After all, the design has remained largely unchanged since its inception, and with good reason; it’s just about perfect. It may surprise you to learn that this is the wristwatch responsible for the introduction of the date window at 3 o’clock – a design feature that is now all but standard across most brands.
Prior to the release of the Rolex Datejust, in 1945, watches only displayed the date by way of a sub-dial. The Rolex Datejust was the first, self-winding, waterproof, chronometer wristwatch to employ a date complication viewed through an aperture, and also the first wristwatch to employ the patented Rolex ‘Cyclops’ lens following its invention in 1953. This magnifier over the date has since become a hallmark of the brand and is found on nearly all of its popular models.
The positioning of the date window at 3 o’clock (now the status quo) was a logical choice given that the majority of people wear their wristwatch on the left wrist. At the 3 o’clock location, the date is easily referred to by a slight tug of the shirt sleeve (or stretching of the wrist). The Datejust is one of Rolex’s most recognised and recognisable timepieces that symbolises the brand’s contribution to the wristwatch’s evolution. It has inspired countless wristwatches since its debut and remains a reference, and a strong contender, in the genre it created.
New in blue
The Rolex Datejust 41 gets a new personality with its brilliant blue dial set in stainless steel and framed by an 18k white gold fluted bezel. Applied hour markers fashioned from 18k gold (to prevent tarnishing) appear around the dial, with the exception of 3 o’clock, which is reserved for the iconic date display. 12 o’clock, meanwhile, is marked by the Rolex crown logo. The markers are filled with long-lasting luminescent blue Chromalight to ensure high legibility in all conditions. The magnified date changes instantaneously (in a few thousandths of a second) at the stroke of midnight.
As the name suggests, the Oyster case is 41mm in diameter. The middle case is constructed from a Monobloc of 904L stainless steel, a superalloy that provides maximum resistance to corrosion and harsh environments. With a hermetically screwed down case back and Twinlock double waterproofness winding crown, the Rolex Datejust 41 has a guaranteed water resistance to 100m (330ft).
The Rolex aesthetic is completed with a 904L stainless steel Oyster flat three-piece link bracelet - designed to be both robust and comfortable - incorporating a folding Oysterclasp with Easylink comfort extension. This ingenious system, which is exclusive to Rolex, allows you to adjust the length of the bracelet by up to 5mm.
Next generation movement
The Rolex Datejust 41 is equipped with the Rolex-manufactured 3235 calibre - a bidirectional self-winding (via Perpetual rotor), mechanical movement. Certified as a Swiss chronometer by COSC and tested a second time by Rolex after the movement is cased up using specially developed technology, the watch offers a precision of -2/ +2 seconds per day. The 3235 calibre is fitted with a Parachrom hairspring for improved resistance to temperature variations and shocks, and provides an approximate power reserve of 70 hours.
Passing the torch
The Rolex Datejust has been a go to day-to-day wristwatch since its innovative birth in 1945. The choice of materials for the new Rolex Datejust 41 continue this tradition, whilst also making this sought-after wristwatch accessible to a wider audience. The mono-colour case and bracelet with white gold bezel gives this classic wristwatch a uniform, modern style that’s sure to be appealing to young watch connoisseurs - ensuring the continuing success of the Rolex Datejust 41 for another generation.
