The Tudor Black Bay GMT is a new model with a strong vintage feel. It was one of several welcome surprises at this year’s Baselworld, quickly becoming a fan favourite. Tudor’s travel watch interpretation really impresses in its development, execution and pricing. Hot from the outset, the Black Bay GMT is continuing to prove popular.
The endless appeal of the Black Bay collection can be attributed to many factors. One of those being that it works well on the wrists of both sexes. The Black Bay GMT follows this same formula to produce a tool watch true to its roots while contemporary in design. The result is as an attractive and functional timepiece that offers impressive versatility.
Introducing the Black Bay GMT
The Black Bay GMT is the first of the coveted BB family to sport the pilot’s complication. As such the debuting tool watch boasts a new in-house movement that supports a supplementary GMT hand that points to the 24-hour scale denoted on the bezel. This allows the wearer to keep track of ‘home’ time, while the central jump-set hour hand can be independently set to local time. A third timezone can be read by rotating the bezel to reflect numbers of hours ahead of or behind home time. (The two-tone bezel provides an easy visual distinction between day hours and night hours.)
Burgundy and blue bezel
The Black Bay GMT measures 41mm and comes in steel. Its main feature is the 24-hour bidirectional rotatable bezel, with coin-edge. Tudor opted for an anodised aluminium bezel insert in blue and matt Burgundy. Also unique to the model is the red snowflake GMT hand, one of the hallmarks of the brand. This is in addition to Tudor’s signature snowflake time hands and hour markers. Both are generously filled with lume. Set against the black matt dial they ensure optimal legibility even in low light. Additional features include the Submariner-inspired big crown and date window at 3 o’clock.
New Tudor movement
The in-house calibre MT5652 was specifically designed for the new Black Bay model. It incorporates the additional coaxial hour hand that rotates once every 24 hours. A sturdy traversing bridge is employed, with a two-point fixation. A variable inertia balance wheel (with non-magnetic silicon balance spring) is held under a full cock. Finishing is exemplary of a Tudor manufacture movement. The openwork rotor is satin-brushed with sand-blasted details. The new self-winding movement is certified by the COSC as a chronometer. Hacking seconds allow for precise time setting. The 70-hour power reserve equals that of the new Rolex GMT-Master II. Given that the Black Bay is a dive watch first and foremost, the case is rated waterproof to 200m.
The Black Bay GMT offers the ability to personalise through interchangeable bands. Choose from a riveted steel bracelet with polished satin finish (inspired by historical models of the 1950s), a “Terra di Siena” brown leather strap with folding clasp and safety catch or a Heritage line black fabric strap with a burgundy stripe.
The Versatile Black Bay
If you find 41mm is still a little too large for your wrist-size, there are several other interesting options in the Black Bay family. The original Submariners that inspired the collection were traditionally smaller. Certain current models respect those dimensions. They make for more compact and lighter wearing - suited to both sexes.
Take for instance the new Black Bay Fifty-Eight. It’s a historical dive watch tribute with a reduced case diameter of 39mm. (Case thickness, lug and band width are also reduced.) Or the true heritage-sized Black Bay 36 - the minimalist Black Bay for more formal settings. This popular unisex choice is the only Black Bay not to feature a rotating bezel.
