Lady Gaga Rocks Tudor Watches (And You Can Too)

In a surprising but very welcome move, Tudor announced Lady Gaga as its first female ambassador last year. Part of the brand’s #BORNTODARE campaign, she joins the likes of David Beckham and the New Zealand All Blacks. Today, we’re spotlighting her choices from Tudor’s current catalogue. A global, leading fashion icon, mindful of everything she wears, Gaga’s choices reflect both the depth and the versatility of the Tudor collection.

Gaga for Tudor

Tudor has made a name for itself by helping to bring neo-vintage designs back to the horological fore. Understated, functional, reliable; modern Tudor watches have quickly become synonymous with an adventurous lifestyle. They are much more than just tool watches, however. This is where Lady Gaga comes into play as a global ambassador. She opens the door to a broader audience. People who are keen on a different type of adventure, one that doesn’t necessarily take place underwater or on a hiking trail.

Lady Gaga has achieved an incredible global following. Six Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, album sales over 30 million, and single sales over 150 million. She is currently working on her sixth studio album. In 2018, she will star in the movie A Star Is Born (opposite Bradley Cooper), due to come out in October. She markets her own brand and her outlandish fashion sense plays a key role in her public persona.

As a Tudor ambassador, Lady Gaga shows how the brand’s watches can be worn to make a stylish statement.

Black Bay - the fashionable choice

Lady Gaga’s primary choice is a classic Black Bay with a matt burgundy bezel on a matching burgundy fabric strap. The wristwatch comes in a 41mm steel case with polished and satin finish. It features a steel unidirectional rotatable bezel with an anodised aluminium insert.

The Black Bay has been a runaway success since it was first introduced in 2012. It’s a heritage-style wristwatch that draws on the history of the brand’s first dive watch: the Submariner, in production from 1954 to 1999. The modern Black Bay derives its DNA from various key models. This includes its case architecture, domed crystal, and domed dial. Not to mention the imposing screw-down crown and signature snowflake hands.

The Submariners were originally intended for military use. They were ergonomic, legible, accurate and robust. These qualities are retained in the modern Black Bay. A good-looking wristwatch with unique vintage appeal. That appeal can be seen in the warm hue of the minute track against the black dial, the rose gold-toned hands and indexes, and the cream coloured lume. As well as the colour and finish of the coin-edge bezel.

On Lady Gaga’s wrist, the Black Bay looks completely contemporary. Tudor, like Gaga, is often perceived as a trendsetter. The fabric strap is a good example - a look that Tudor has made its own. The Black Bay also features Tudor’s first manufacture movement, which debuted in 2015.

Movement: Manufacture Calibre MT5602 (COSC) - Self-winding mechanical movement with bidirectional rotor system and silicon balance spring/ Power Reserve: approximately 70 hours (meaning you can take off the watch on Friday evening and put it on again on Monday morning without having to wind it)

Waterproof: to 200m (660ft)

Black Bay 41 - the formal choice

For her more serious moments (she’s also an activist and a philanthropist), Lady Gaga can switch to her Black Bay 41. As the name suggests, this is another 41mm steel case (with polished and satin finish). But one that lends itself to formal settings.

The middle case is slimmer for a look that is elegant, yet still slightly sporty. A flat sapphire crystal sits flush with the fixed bezel. The low profile, combined with smooth polished steel bezel, allows the Black Bay 41 to slide discretely under a shirt cuff.

The Black Bay 41 is again inspired by Tudor’s heritage diver’s watch. Specifically, the earlier editions produced during the 1950s. Lady Gaga’s choice sports an elegant black lacquered dial. Snowflake hands and indexes gleam with white lume. And the large winding crown is again present. Lady Gaga wears her Black Bay 41 on a matching steel bracelet with satin finish.

Movement: Self-winding mechanical movement, Calibre 2824/ Power Reserve: approximately 38 hours

Waterproof: to 150m (500ft)

Glamour Date - the feminine choice

When she wants to feel her most feminine, Lady Gaga opts for a 31mm Glamour Date in steel and yellow gold. Her choice includes an opaline dial set with diamonds. The polished steel case features a steel and yellow gold diamond-set double bezel. A discreet date aperture appears on the dial, inset from the 3 o’clock diamond index.

Yellow gold is used for the screw-down winding crown and the two-tone steel bracelet, complete with folding clasp and safety catch. Lady Gaga is a person of many outfits. This more traditional two-tone from Tudor works when she’s going for an elegant chic look.

Movement: Self-winding mechanical movement, Calibre 2671/ Power Reserve: approximately 38 hours

Waterproof: to 100m (330ft)
