The Rolex Oyster Perpetual is synonymous with the modern wristwatch. It not only carries the history of the Rolex brand but also the history of the wristwatch’s coming to the fore. The genius of this timepiece makes it as relevant today as when it was first conceived almost a century ago by Rolex founder, Hans Wilsdorf. Defining characteristics such as readability, reliability and sturdiness combine to offer a timepiece that is practical yet elegant, and aesthetically pleasing on the wrists of both men and women. Available in a range of sizes and dial colours, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual is a great choice for the perfect ‘his and hers’ pair this Valentine’s Day.
With the Oyster Perpetual, Rolex offers a pared back design that is as timeless as it is universally appealing. The range is extensive, with something to suit just about all tastes and wrist sizes. For the sake of clarity, in this article we will focus on just two models; the Oyster Perpetual 39 with dark rhodium dial and the Oyster Perpetual 36 with red grape dial.
The dial of the larger Oyster Perpetual 39 comes in a distinctive, masculine dark rhodium colour, offset with subtle touches of blue that delineate each five second interval. The Oyster Perpetual 36 meanwhile presents a slightly softer, more feminine red grape dial, which is incredibly striking on the wrist. In both models, the hour markers are fashioned from 18ct gold to prevent tarnishing. These indices are dimensioned in balance with the respective wristwatch case size - emphasising the larger surface of the Oyster Perpetual 39, and the slightly more compact area of the Oyster Perpetual 36. With the display limited to the time only - hours, minutes and seconds – the focus remains on the purity of the dial.
The watch faces are housed within a Monobloc middle case crafted from 904L stainless steel. The use of this superalloy, normally reserved for the high technology, aerospace and chemical industries provides maximum resistance to corrosion and harsh environments. Finished with a high-quality polish, it looks and feels great on the wrist and contrasts nicely with the brushed bracelet. The Oyster case design - invented and patented in 1926, making it the first waterproof wristwatch in the world and a pivotal player in the development of the modern wristwatch - is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100m (330ft), with the fluted case back hermetically screwed down.
The winding crown (embossed with the Rolex crown) also screws down hermetically, by way of Rolex’s patented Twinlock double waterproofness system, to maintain the integrity of the watertight case. The broad, flat three-piece links Oyster bracelet completes the Rolex Oyster Perpetual’s look, made of the same 904L steel and fitted with an Oysterclasp. The crystal is made from scratch-free sapphire.
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual is powered by state-of-the-art mechanical, self-winding movements - calibre 3132 for the 39mm case, calibre 3130 for the 36mm - entirely developed and produced by Rolex and certified as Superlative Chronometers. Both are fitted with a Parachrom hairspring that provides improved resistance to temperature variations and shocks, whilst calibre 3132 in the larger Oyster Perpetual 39 is also fitted with Paraflex shock absorbers. The Perpetual rotor, bidirectional self-winding movements each offer a power reserve of approximately 48 hours.
An Enduring Icon
The mystique of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual is its timeless, classic functionality and sleek appeal. Hans Wilsdorf’s persistence to make a precision wristwatch that could stand up under extreme conditions resulted in the creation of an iconic timepiece that can withstand against dust, pressure, shocks and water. As a fashion statement the Rolex Oyster Perpetual speaks of good taste - its refined, elegant style lends itself to be worn by men and women alike, making it the perfect couple’s choice.
