Launched in 1953, the Rolex Submariner has come to define the mechanical dive watch genre, offering iconic design and exceptional functionality. Presented in a 40mm Oyster case, its distinctive dial with large luminescent hour markers is framed by a knurled unidirectional rotating Cerachrom bezel, complete with engraved 60-minute graduations for tracking elapsed time whilst diving. Worn on a matching Oyster bracelet, with flat three-piece links, the Rolex Submariner is rated water resistant to 300m (1,000ft). Inside is the Calibre 3135, a self-winding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex and certified as a Superlative Chronometer.
Patek Philippe Ref. 5146/1R
As inventor of the annual calendar, it is only fitting that Patek Philippe is also the undisputed master of this complication. Presented in a 39mm round case hewn from 18k rose gold and measuring just 11.23mm thick, the Ref. 5146/1R offers a wonderfully traditional Annual Calendar display complete with moon phases. Time is indicated centrally by lume-filled hands and applied markers in gold, while the day and month are shown on two sub-dials at 9 and 3 o’clock respectively. The date is shown via an aperture at 6 o’clock, with a superb moon-phase display just above. Just below 12 o’clock a power reserve indicator keeps track of the power remaining in the self-winding Calibre 324 S IRM QA LU, which is visible through the sapphire case back. Completing the look is an opulent rose gold “drop links” bracelet.
TAG Heuer Monaco Calibre 12 Automatic Chronograph
In 1969, TAG Heuer broke with tradition by creating the first square-cased, water-resistant watch in the history of watchmaking. Powered by the famous Chronomatic Calibre 11, the Monaco is also the world’s first automatic chronograph. A year later, Steve McQueen chose to wear it in the 1970 car-racing classic film, Le Mans: all but confirming its future status as an icon. The 39mm steel case pairs beautifully with a rich blue dial replete with white and red accents. Time is indicated centrally, as are chronograph seconds. Two contrasting square-shaped sub-dials appear at 3 and 9 o’clock, showing running seconds and elapsed chronograph minutes respectively. Providing the power is the well-respected TAG Heuer Calibre 12 automatic chronograph movement. The case is rated water resistant to 100m and paired with a stylish blue alligator leather strap, complete with folding buckle with safety push buttons.
Omega Seamaster Diver 300m
With variations of this classic dive watch worn by James Bond himself, the Omega Seamaster Diver 300m has always proven a popular choice with aficionados. Available with either a lacquered black or blue dial with contrasting white indices and red highlights, it features a date window at the 3 o’clock position. Surrounding the dial is a matching black or blue polished ceramic unidirectional rotating bezel, mounted on a 41 mm stainless steel case with a helium-escape valve at 10 o'clock. Inside is the highly reliable Co-Axial calibre 2500, a self-winding chronometer that offers a healthy 48-hour power reserve. The watch is presented on a stainless steel bracelet and is a great all-rounder, suitable for just about any occasion.
TUDOR Heritage Chrono Blue
Embodying the spirit of the historic Monte Carlo model from the early 1970’s, the TUDOR Heritage Chrono Blue is a celebration of not only where the Swiss brand has come from but also where it is going. Offered in a sporty 42mm round steel case with satin and polished finishes, it boasts the same bright and catchy blue colour scheme as the original from 50 years ago, contrasting against a light grey central dial and orange accents (for the minute scale, sub-dial scales and seconds-hand). Framing the dial is a bidirectional rotatable 12-hour graduated steel bezel with blue insert, providing a second time-zone display. Screw-down chronograph pushers and crown ensure water resistance up to 150m, whilst accuracy is assured by the self-winding mechanical movement, Calibre 2892.
Breitling Colt Chronograph Automatic
Breitling is renowned for its masculine and robust watches, and the Colt Chronograph Automatic is no exception. The 44 mm-diameter polished steel case is water-resistant to 200 m (660 ft) and fitted with a large screw-locked crown complete with protective reinforcements. The Volcano Black dial features a fine circular raised motif and provides the perfect backdrop for the oversized hands and hour-markers, the legibility of which is further enhanced by a luminescent coating. Equipped with an officially chronometer-certified mechanical movement, the Colt Chronograph Automatic brilliantly reinterprets all the key assets of the Colt collection, which is born for action, feats and thrills.
