The Second Coming Of The Omega Railmaster

Meet the new contemporary version of the Omega Railmaster, a fresh, modern timepiece that revives the practicality of its origins. Part of Omega’s Seamaster collection, the Railmaster has a personality all of its own, with that special Omega touch of style - making it a very satisfying choice for regular wrist wear.

A thought for the railways

The personal watch (originally a pocket watch) owes much of its existence to the advent of rail. Trains that ran on a set schedule prompted the necessity to be able to know the time precisely. Perhaps even more important than for the commuters, high-precision watches were relied upon to keep the trains on said schedule. Omega’s alliance with the railroad is a strong one - officially supplying pocket watches to rail companies from 1895.

However, the original Railmaster, released in 1957, was the first wristwatch truly dedicated to the railway employees, protected - by a special anti-magnetic double case back - against the damaging effects of electric fields of up to 1,000 gauss (useful as well to scientists, technicians, electricians and all other professions who worked in the vicinity of strong electric currents).

The Railmaster in its current form was revived at last year’s Baselworld and received, not surprisingly, a very positive response with industry insiders praising its inherent ‘cool’ factor and affordable price point.

Revived and refreshed

The Omega Railmaster is presented in a 40mm symmetrical, stainless steel case (with a wave-edge design featured on the case back). As in its first appearance, so today the Omega Railmaster is a functional wristwatch designed for easy reading of the time. This lends itself to a simple, practical, yet elegant layout that’s pleasing to the eye.

The brushed stainless steel hands and triangular, recessed hour markers are filled with creamy beige Super-LumiNova to give the dial that real vintage feel. The traditional railroad track index chapter doubles for both the minutes and the seconds. The seconds hand is fashioned to resemble a lollipop, reminiscent of the railway crossings. The Omega crosshairs are also present, subtle indicatators of the watch’s chronometeric precision. A classic touch is added by the transferred beige “Railmaster” insignia on the dial face.

Perfectly paired dials and bands

The dials themselves play a major role in stylising the Omega Railmaster by receiving a vertically-brushed finished. They come in two colours - black or grey. Equally stylish are the band options for each dial colour. Both can be paired with a stainless steel bracelet, while the grey dial has the alternative of a brown leather strap, and the black dial also comes with an extremely visually satisfying two-tone grey textile strap.

Co-Axial Master Chronometer

Though aesthetically the Omega Railmaster remains faithful to the original, the technical updates are revolutionary by comparison. The modern version is equipped with the very best Omega 8806 calibre - a self-winding movement employing a Co-Axial escapement (two stacked escape wheels that result in a significant reduction of friction, requiring less or no lubrication, and allowing for longer service intervals). The movement, which also includes a silicon balance spring, with automatic winding in both directions, is a Certified Master Chronometer, approved by METAS, and provides a power reserve of 55 hours.

In the present-day version, it is the 8806 calibre (rather than the case back) that provides the Omega Railmaster with anti-magnetic resistance to magnetic fields, now of up to 15,000 guass. The Omega Railmaster also has a water resistance of 15 bar (150m/ 500ft).

It’s just cool

Technically robust, highly precise, and just an all-round good-looking watch, the Omega Railmaster is an excellent choice for a daily companion that will bring a smile to your face every time you go to check your wrist.
