A rose by any other name…

The diamond line bracelet is often known by another name: the “tennis bracelet”. Just how this chic diamond bracelet earned its nickname and became immortalised in sporting lore is actually quite a fun story, involving former world-ranked tennis star, Chris Evert.

Back in the 1980’s, Evert established a reputation not only for her exceptional skill on the tennis court (she won an impressive eighteen Grand Slam single tournaments in her career, including three Wimbledon Championships), but also for her impeccable style.

Nicknamed “The Ice Maiden”, she was known for wearing delicate lace dresses and perfectly chosen accessories during matches, a trend that has since become common place. Her trademark accessory was a gorgeous diamond line bracelet, which, as you might have guessed, was not designed to be worn during such strenuous activity.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Evert’s bracelet eventually broke and fell off her wrist during a spirited game in the 1987 U.S. Open Championships. Despite the stakes, she famously refused to continue playing until her precious bracelet was recovered, such was its sentimental value.

Eventually the bracelet was found and play resumed. Following that match, which was watched by millions around the world, jewellers everywhere began receiving requests for diamond “tennis bracelets”. Continuing to grow in popularity ever since, the diamond line bracelet remains today a symbol of style and sophistication
