Launched in 1963, the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona is today one of the world’s most popular and recognisable luxury sports watches. Created to meet the specific demands of professional race car drivers, its distinctive tachymeter-engraved bezel enables its wearer to measure average speeds of up to 400 kilometres or miles per hour, as they choose. Popular amongst serious watch collectors and stylish celebrities alike, this iconic watch is now available on the highly innovative and wonderfully comfortable Oysterflex bracelet, developed and patented by Rolex.

The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona

This version of the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona (ref. 116518LN) is offered in a 40mm Oyster case crafted from 18ct yellow gold, and features an attractive and functional black monobloc Cerachrom bezel in ceramic with engraved tachymetric scale in gold. Resistant to corrosion and effectively scratchproof, this Rolex-patented material is lauded for its extreme durability. Additionally, as Cerachrom is unaffected by UV light, its black hue is resistant to fading — a crucial element for a chronograph that may expect to spend a lot of time on the racetrack.

Boasting Rolex’s signature monobloc crafted middle case in yellow gold, a fluted hermetically sealed screw-down caseback, and a crown-guarded winding crown that features the brand’s famed Triplock waterproofness system, the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona can withstand submersion in water to a 100-metre depth. Screw-down chronograph pushers meanwhile, located on either side of the crown at 3 o’clock, enable the start, stop and reset of the watch’s chronograph capabilities.

The champagne colour dial is striking and provides the perfect contrast for the three sub-dials in black. Two are dedicated to the chronograph indications, with a 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and a 12-hour counter at 9 o’clock, whilst the third shows the running seconds at 6 o’clock. Hours and minutes are displayed centrally, as are the chronograph seconds, with the central sweep seconds hand allowing an accurate reading to 1/8th of a second. A stop seconds function allows for precise time setting.

Providing the power in this Rolex Cosmograph Daytona is the self-winding Perpetual calibre 4130. An in-house mechanical movement, the 4130 was entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. Its architecture has been specifically designed to incorporate far fewer components than a standard chronograph, thereby enhancing the movement’s reliability. Equipped with a Perpetual rotor providing bidirectional self-winding, the movement offers the wearer a healthy 72-hour power reserve.

Inside you will also find Rolex’s patented Parachrom hairspring — a component that’s resistant to shock, magnetic fields, and changes of temperature. Like all Rolex Perpetual movements, the 4130 is a certified Swiss chronometer, a designation reserved for high-precision watches that have successfully passed the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC) tests. It has also undergone additional testing by Rolex after the movement has been cased up, thus earning it the further designation of Superlative Chronometer, capable of offering a rate accuracy of -2/2+ seconds per day.

The Rolex Oysterflex Bracelet

For the final touch, Rolex has paired this Rolex Cosmograph Daytona with its popular Oysterflex bracelet, which some may recognise from the Rolex Yacht-Master 40. Developed and patented by Rolex, the bracelet is a prime example of cutting-edge engineering that merges the robust, reliability of metal with the comfort and suppleness of elastomer. At its core lies a superelastic metal blade overmoulded with high-performance black elastomer, a material that is particularly resistant to environmental effects and very durable.

To ensure a comfortable and secure fit on the wrist, the Oysterflex bracelet features an Oysterlock safety clasp, which prevents accidental opening, and is also equipped with the Rolex patented Easylink rapid extension system that allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by approximately 5mm, for additional comfort in any circumstance.

Available now for £20,200, the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona in 18ct yellow gold will make a striking addition to any collection. Also available in a dazzling white gold (Ref. 116519LN) or a warm Everose gold (Ref. 116515LN), it should come as no surprise that Rolex lovers everywhere have been clamouring to claim one of these beauties.
