- About Us
Luxury watchmaker Rolex has a long-standing association with the world of cinema, both on and off the silver screen. The watch of choice for numerous actors, Rolex is also proud to support Oscar-winning directors Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, Kathryn Bigelow and Alejandro G. Iñárritu, as they continue to push the boundaries of the art of filmmaking. Today, we thought we would take a closer look at the Rolex watch on the wrist of each of these famed story-tellers.
Martin Scorsese – Rolex Day-Date 40
Widely regarded as one of the most influential filmmakers in the history of the art form, Martin Scorsese is truly an icon. It is only fitting therefore that he should wear one of the brand’s most iconic timepieces; the Rolex Day-Date 40. Introduced in 1956, it was the first wristwatch to display the date and day of the week spelt out in full in a window on the dial. Available exclusively in 18ct gold or platinum, Scorsese’s choice is 18ct white gold paired with a rich blue dial, worn on the distinctive President bracelet in matching white gold.
James Cameron – Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea
For a man that is almost as famous for his explorations as he is his award-winning films, it seems only fitting that James Cameron wears the rugged and robust Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea. Engineered to be the ultimate dive watch, the Sea-Dweller Deepsea is waterproof to an incredible depth of 12,800 feet (3,900 meters). Presented in a 44mm Oyster case crafted from 904L steel, it features a black dial with hour markers fashioned from 18ct gold and a highly legible Chromalight display.
Kathryn Bigelow – Rolex Date 34
As the first and only woman to win an Academy Award for Best Director, Kathryn Bigelow is a trailblazer in every sense of the word. Known for her provocative films which depict incidents in time and act as a reflection on society, Bigelow has firmly established herself as a true auteur. On her wrist she chooses to wear an enduring classic, the Rolex Date 34. Part of the Datejust family, it is housed in a 34mm 904L steel case with matching Oyster bracelet and understated black dial. At 3 o’clock the distinctive Cylops lens enhances the date aperture, a recognisable Rolex feature.
Alejandro G. Iñárritu – Rolex Sky-Dweller Steel and Yellow Gold
The winner of two consecutive Oscars for Best Director (Birdman in 2015, The Revenant in 2016), Alejandro G. Iñárritu is known for his exploration of the human condition. Originally from Mexico, Iñárritu’s films now take him all over the world. To help him keep track of the time, no matter where finds himself, he wears his trusty Rolex Sky-Dweller in steel and yellow gold, complete with attractive champagne-colour dial. Equipped with ingenious dual time zone and annual calendar displays, this technological masterpiece is protected by 11 to 14 patents depending on the model and has been a popular choice with global travellers since its introduction in 2012.
